Luo Ping, a prominent Chinese painter of the Qing Dynasty, lived in Ganquan, present-day Yangzhou, Jiangsu. His courtesy name was Dunfu and his pseudonyms were Liangfeng and Huazhisi Seng. Born in 1733, Luo's life began with loss and sadness, with his father passing away when he was just one year old, followed by his mother's demise.
Artistic Beginnings and Mentorship
At a young age, Luo was recognized as a talented poet and gained admission to the exclusive artistic circles of Yangzhou. He married Fang Wanyi, a poet and painter, at 19, and their children also became artists, painting plum blossoms, the family's trademark (罗家梅派). Luo's artistic style was shaped by his mentor, Jin Nong, a renowned poet, artist, and bon vivant. This influential relationship lasted for six years, during which Luo painted pictures for Jin Nong, who signed them with his own name and sold them.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
Luo's unique personal style is characterized by paintings of people, Buddhist images, plum with bamboo, flowers, and scenery. Some notable works include:
- Drinking in the Bamboo Garden on the Lantern Festival, a depiction of a gathering beneath a lantern to celebrate the first full moon of the year.
- Spider Spinning Its Web, showcasing his mastery of intricate, detailed scenes.
- Zhong Kui Supported by Ghosts, highlighting his ability to blend the supernatural with everyday life.
Legacy and Later Life
Luo often visited Beijing, causing a sensation in the cultural scene with his long painting scroll featuring ghosts. He claimed to have seen such creatures with his own eyes, leaving a lasting impression on those who witnessed his work.
