l'ispirazione per questa foto è arrivata durante una spedizione in barca che sargent ha affrontato il tamigi a pangbourne a settembre 1885 , con l'artista americano edwin austin abbey , durante il quale vide lanterne cinesi appese tra alberi e gigli . ha iniziato la foto mentre era a casa del pittore f . D . miglio a broadway , Worcestershire , poco dopo il suo trasferimento in gran bretagna da parigi . Inizialmente ha usato il Millets's five-year-old la figlia katharine come sua modella , ma presto fu sostituita da polly e dorothy ( Bambola ) Barnard , le figlie dell'illustratore frederick barnard , perché avevano il colore esatto dei capelli che sargent cercava . Bambola , undici anni , è sulla sinistra ; Polly , sette anni , è sulla destra .
