Ogni giorno in un periodo in estate e in autunno dipingeva nei pochissimi minuti in cui la luce era perfetta . l'estate seguente riprese a dipingere e alla fine terminò entro la fine di ottobre 1886 . le ragazze sono dolly e polly barnard . il loro padre era l'illustratore frederick barnard - un amico di Sargent's . Il titolo deriva dal ritornello di una canzone popolare " ye shepherds tell me " di joseph mazzinghi .
