Vasily Grigoryevich Perov was a Russian painter and one of the founding members of Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian realist painters. Born on January 2, 1834 (21 December 1833 Old Style), in Tobolsk, Russia, Perov's life was marked by his passion for art and his desire to capture the essence of everyday life.

Early Life and Education

Perov was born as an illegitimate son of a local procurator baron Grigory Karlovich Kridener and Akulina Ivanova. Although his parents married soon after his birth, he was not able to inherit his father's name and title. He was written under the godfather's surname — Vasiliev, which he later changed to Perov, a nickname given by his teacher who taught him calligraphy as a child.

Artistic Career

Perov's artistic career began when he was admitted to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1853. He learned from several renowned artists and was awarded with a minor silver medal for his sketch of a boy's head in 1856. Later, he received many other awards, including a major golden medal for Sermon in a Village in 1861. Perov's paintings often depicted scenes from everyday life, such as The Queue at The Fountain, A Meal in the Monastery, and Last Journey. His work was characterized by his attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects.

Notable Works and Legacy

Some of Perov's notable works include Paris Ragpickers, A Scene at the Railroad, and The Birdcatcher.
