Nicolaes Muys was a Dutch artist born in Rotterdam in 1740 and died in 1808. He was known for his paintings, glass engravings, printmaking, and as a collector and dealer. Muys was a leading artist in Zeeland between 1735 and 1785, and produced still lifes, biblical and mythological themes, natural history studies, genre, historical and topographical works, portraits, sketches, etchings, and mezzotints.

Artistic Career

Muys took on his first art pupil in 1733 and continued teaching for the rest of his life. He became head of the Dordrecht Guild of St. Luke in 1742 and remained in that position until 1792. In 1751, he became regent of the Hague drawing school associated with the Confrerie Pictura of The Hague. Muys founded the 'Brotherhood' of the Confrerie in The Hague in 1736, a fraternity of amateur art lovers from Dordrecht and environs, of which he was headman during the years 1752–1762.

Notable Works

Some of Muys' notable works include Portrait of Aernout van Beeftingh, his Wife Jacoba Maria Boon and their Children, created in 1797. This family portrait showcases the Van Beeftingh family and is a great example of Muys' skill in capturing the essence of his subjects.
