Barbara Kasten is an American artist born in 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her conceptual art and her use of abstract video and photographic projections. Kasten studied at the University of Arizona, the California College of Arts and Crafts, and the University of Fine Arts in Poznań, Poland. She was influenced by the Bauhaus movement and László Moholy-Nagy. Kasten's work often involves the depiction of three-dimensional spaces onto two-dimensional planes, and she often uses mirrors, lights, and props in her conceptually-based pieces. Her best-known work is characterized by a flattening effect, and she has won numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Hays Fellowship.
