Lincoln sat for this portrait and four others in Alexander Gardner’s studio on November 8, 1863. The following week the president traveled to Pennsylvania to dedicate a new cemetery for the Union soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Gardner followed and was in the audience with his camera when Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. 98.32.310
