(c. 1430/1440 – 1482) was an Early Netherlandish painter, known for his expressive and emotional style during the Northern Renaissance period. He is considered one of the most influential painters in this movement, with works like "The Adoration of the Kings" showcasing his mastery over oil on panel techniques.
This painting is also known as the Monforte Altarpiece, which was originally the central panel of a triptych with movable wings that are now lost. It takes its name from a convent in Monforte de Lemos, in northern Spain, where it is presumed to have been commissioned.
The painting measures 147 centimeters in height and 242 centimeters in width, making it a large-scale work for its time. It is created using oil paint on an oak panel, which was a popular medium during the Northern Renaissance period.
The Early Netherlandish Art Movement, also known as the Flemish Primitives, is characterized by an independent artistic evolution in the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands during the 15th and 16th centuries. This period marked the beginning of the Northern Renaissance, which was distinct from its Italian counterpart.
The Adoration of the Kings is believed to have been created around 1470, showcasing Hugo Van Der Goes' mastery over oil on panel techniques during this period.
The painting depicts Mary with the Child on her womb, subject of the adoration of the three Magi. One of the latter, with a flashing red mantle, is kneeling in front of her; his crown with jewels lies beside him. The other two kings stand behind him, one holding a box and the other a chalice. In the background, Joseph stands next to a donkey, while shepherds and angels appear on the left side of the panel.
