View by Marianne North of a road near Bath, Jamaica, with cabbage palms, bread fruit, cocoa, and coral trees. She visited Jamaica in 1871, and rented a 20-room house in the old deserted botanic garden. There was a magnificent view of a steep wooded valley and meadows from her veranda, while all around the house there was a tangle of exotic plants. She wrote "I am in a state of ecstasy and hardly know what to paint first." However, she settled into a routine of going out to paint at daylight and returning home at midday.
