Tom Uttech imbues his grand-scale landscape paintings with a sense of mystery and awe—a pulsating, almost palpable spirituality that links him back to nineteenth-century thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. The artist frequently travels to Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, just across the United States border from his native northern woods of Wisconsin. Uttech is energized artistically by his connection to nature and the impulse to paint it. His paintings are created from memory in the studio where he starts to “draw a place where I’d like to be.” Enassamishhinjijweian’s title, inspired by the language of the local Anishinabe (Ojibwe) tribe, translates to “hope of good things to come.
