Giotto è stato commissionato dagli Ognissanti, o All-Saints, Chiesa di Firenze per creare questa pittura a schermo, ed è l'unico quadro che è stato universalmente accettato come suo. Come pala d'altare, il dipinto stesso è vario grande, alto oltre 10 piedi. Gli studiosi sostengono che il pezzo sarebbe stato usato come schermo del coro, dove sarebbe stato più visibile al pubblico, o se fosse stato usato come altare principale della chiesa, in tal caso sarebbe stato più visibile ai fratelli dell'ordine. Il pezzo è anche indicativo della tecnica unica di Giotto di creare realistici volti tridimensionali e il drappeggio di stoffa sulle figure del dipinto.
