Augusto Carelli was an Italian painter and artist. He was born in Naples, Italy in 1871 to a family of musicians. His sister Emma was a singer and his uncle Michele Caputo was a composer and librettist. Carelli studied painting with G. Toma and E. Dal Bono, developing a sense of color and technique. However, he suffered from saturnism due to handling colors with his hands, which led to hair loss and dental problems. He was eventually forced to stop painting and focus on music instead. In 1893, Carelli moved to Russia to teach singing at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where he had private students including the children of Alexander II. He married Elisabetta Rudo in 1907.
