Hermann Schlichting was a German fluid dynamics engineer. He studied mathematics, physics, and applied mechanics at the University of Jena, Vienna, and Göttingen. In 1930, he wrote his PhD thesis 'Über das ebene Windschattenproblem' under Prof. Ludwig Prandtl at the University of Göttingen. He worked on fluid flows with viscous effects and airfoil aerodynamics. Schlichting joined Technische Universität Braunschweig in 1937 and became a professor in 1938. He is known for his work on boundary layer theory, including the Tollmien–Schlichting wave and the Schlichting jet.
