Francesco Petrarch, also known as Francesco di Petracco, was born in Arezzo, Italy in 1304. He was an Italian scholar, poet, and humanist, known for his contributions to the Renaissance flowering of lyric poetry. Petrarch's poems, particularly his sonnets addressed to an idealized beloved named Laura, are considered to be among the most influential in the Italian language. He is also credited with initiating the 14th-century Italian Renaissance and the founding of Renaissance humanism through his rediscovery of Cicero's letters. Petrarch died in Arquà, Padua in 1374.
