Hattie Carnegie, born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Vienna, Austria in 1889, was a successful fashion entrepreneur. She immigrated to New York in 1892 with her family and began her career in the fashion industry as a teenager. Carnegie started as a salesperson in a department store and later opened her own millinery shop. She became known for her fashionable hats and dresses, and her designs were worn by many celebrities and socialites. In addition to selling her own designs, Carnegie began traveling frequently to Paris to import the styles of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and other European designers. She was awarded the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion in 1955. Carnegie died in New York in 1956.
