Johann Gualbert Raffalt, son of the landscape painter Ignaz Raffalt, was born in Murau, Austria. When he was four years old his parents moved to Vienna, where he later attended the Academy of Fine Arts from 1851 to 1855. He then traveled to Hungary and Italy, where he died in 1865.
