Josef Thorak was born on February 7, 1889, in Vienna, Austria. He was an Austrian-German sculptor who became known for oversize monumental sculptures, particularly of male figures. He was one of the most prominent sculptors of the Third Reich and was included in the Gottbegnadeten-Liste, a list of artists considered crucial to National Socialist culture. Thorak died on February 26, 1952, in Bad Endorf, Bavaria.
