Joe Minter is an American sculptor born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1943. He is best known for his African Village in America, an ever-evolving art environment made of scrap metal and found materials. The theme of his work is the recognition of African American history from the first arrivals of captured Africans to the present. Minter's work has been exhibited in major exhibitions in the United States and is part of the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
