Richard Edward Shaw is an American ceramicist and professor born in Los Angeles, California, United States in 1941. He is known for his trompe-l'œil style, which refers to the illusion that a two-dimensional surface is three-dimensional. Shaw studied under some of the most innovative ceramic sculptors including Ron Nagle, Jim Melchert, Manuel Neri, and Robert Arneson. His work often resembles assemblages or collections of everyday objects, and he has been a leading ceramics innovator for more than five decades.
