William H. Watkins was an American audio innovator, born in Baltimore, Maryland, to free African American parents, William and Henrietta Watkins. He developed the famous Watkins Dual-Drive Woofer, the renowned WE-1 large floor-standing speaker system, the recently introduced compact Generation 4 unit, and numerous other high-performance speakers. Watkins also contributed to marine mammal bioacoustics, developing the first tape recorder that could withstand being taken out to sea. He passed away in 2018.
